Jesus, God with us, brought all who believe into a relationship with Himself, the Father and the Holy Spirit. Every relationship involves communication, and our loving God communicates many things to each of us through diverse ways, as is clearly shown in the bible. What God is saying to each of us day by day builds up over the years into a harmonious Life Message. It’s unique to you. God has been relating a very personal series of messages to you over time. Here’s how to link them up into your own vivid Life Message from God.
Treasuring God’s communications.
“I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Job 23:12 Job valued what God had been saying to him more than he valued food for his sustenance. This included fasting to sharpen his sensitivity to God. We see the same principle with Jesus fasting in the wilderness. He became hungry, and the enemy attempted to dissuade Him from His focused communion with the Father. Jesus counters, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4.
Our Treasure Chest.
We safeguard our gold, silver, jewels and other valuables and keep them where they’ll be protected from loss, whether from being mislaid or looted. We also highly value everything God communicates to us. We take what God communicates to us and ensure that it’s protected like the treasure it is. Stored safely, but where we can get access to it. This isn’t buried treasure on some deserted island marked X on a hand-scrawled map. This is a treasure that’s for our consideration and our use. It’s safely recorded and kept in our treasure chest, our heart.
Mary, treasuring all that happened.
"Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19. Mary treasured up the treasure. What things? How would these be valuable to her? Let’s observe her response to the angelic message with a fresh perspective. Here’s a virtuous, young, Jewish woman keeping herself pure for her husband-to-be. Suddenly, an unannounced and unexpected visit from a spirit messenger from God. She’s not overwhelmed that an angel appeared to her. On the contrary, she’s pondering the intent of his unusual greeting. And then this spirit astonishingly declares that she will give birth to a boy who is… God! She’s still not overwhelmed. She merely enquires by what means this will be, as she’s a virgin. The spirit messenger explains that the Holy Spirit will overshadow her and, through God’s intervention, she will conceive miraculously. She’s still not overwhelmed. She merely accepts this as true. Why did this unprecedented, seemingly bizarre message not faze her?
Treasuring Scripture.
Treasuring up all God’s communications to us requires our treasuring of God’s written word to us, the bible. Reading, absorbing, growing in understanding and applying it in our lives. As a devout Jew, Mary would have known that the Rescuer/Redeemer/Ruler was coming, Son of David, mysteriously God born of a virgin - as it is written “…the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel (With-us-is-God).” Isaiah 7:14. Her community would have pondered how this scripture and others related to it would be fulfilled.
The Holy Spirit will also intensify, make more vivid, “quicken” certain scriptures for each of us that He’s using to prepare us. This was part of the treasure in her heart before the announcement from God. Treasuring up the word of God and the ways of God, she was receptive to accepting that she was chosen as that virgin and her conception would be miraculous.
Mary kept and pondered the treasure.
“… Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19. Mary had been treasuring the treasure. What she’d kept safely, she could use to carefully consider her Life Message from God. She’d received counsel from God through many means: scripture, angelic announcements, confirmations, signs, prophecies, spiritual insights, miracles, and dreams. This counsel had come to her directly and came through others; Isaiah, Gabriel, Elizabeth and Zechariah, Joseph, shepherds, Simeon, Anna the prophetess, and learned men from the east. All combined, showed that she and Joseph were chosen to protect, nurture and raise God’s Son.
Time passed, and ordinary things filled their lives. Twelve years on, they find this son discussing deep spiritual matters with doctors of theology who are astonished by His understanding and answers. Mary and Joseph are amazed, too. Jesus says, “Why did you seek Me? Didn’t you know I must be about My Father’s business?” They didn’t understand. But Mary kept all these sayings in her heart. All she had been treasuring will help Mary to make sense of her life’s purposes and what’s ahead.
All God’s people have a Life Message.
The bible is full of true stories about ordinary men and women just like us, whose Life Message can be seen: Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Joseph, Moses, David, Samson, and Peter the fisherman are just a few.
Our Life Message will help us when the going gets tough. Take Paul. Jesus tells Ananias, “… he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel… I will show him how many things he must suffer for My sake.” Over the years, God unfolds Paul’s Life Message. Then, at a pivotal time, he gets many warnings (one from Agabus the prophet). Roman prison’s ahead for you. His response? “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
Paul was prepared by God, in phases, with aspects of his Life Message. It grew to reveal this: “Paul, you’re one of My Special Messengers to Gentiles, kings, children of Israel, set apart to be led by the Holy Spirit on missions as an Apostle. You’ll have opposition, suffering, imprisonment, but My grace will empower you.” This helped Paul to persevere and bear much fruit. Notice - Jesus told Paul, “You’ll bear My name before… kings…” He was young when Jesus told Him this, and old and seasoned before it came to pass. What if Paul hadn’t treasured all this?
How to uncover your Life Message.
Your discovery begins as you keep a record of every communication you get for you from God. Write them down, in full, with the date, place, and all details and any comments that clarify them. Keep them in date order in a file. Include your special experiences with God, miracles, prophecy, visions, dreams, etc. Make a copy. Keep the original in full, unedited. Take the duplicate and edit out aspects which aren’t central (prayerfully, discerningly). Select the key communications (as in Paul’s Life Message above). You’ll be amazed by the accumulated things that God says to you. It’s treasure. Consider it, pray about it, act on it. Finding your Life Message from God will result in the most satisfying life you could ever imagine.
