You Are... A Healer through Me

We know the wonderful stories of Jesus healing people who are sick, lame, blind, and deaf. He could because He’s who He is, right? Not quite. He had to live like us, and so, He had to trust in the power of the Spirit like an ordinary human. We can follow His example and bring healing too.

In His ministry mandate, He declared, “The Spirit is upon Me…” See Luke 4:18. And so the Spirit was there to heal when people rushed to Jesus. “… the power of the Lord was present to heal them.” Luke 5:17. And that power flowed through Him: “…the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.” Luke 6:19.

Now that explains why He could deputise others to heal because it’s done through the power of the Spirit. He told them to go to the towns with this instruction: “… heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” Luke 10:9. It’s wonderful to read these amazing things in our Bibles. The wonder continues with you and me because we’re told that as believers, “these signs will follow those who believe: In My name…they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. ” Mark 16:17-18. See Mark 16:17-18. The same Holy Spirit who was on and flowing in Jesus to heal is the same Holy Spirit on and in us.

You are a healer through God! Healing is through the Spirit through our expectation. Biblical healing is a very large subject, so I recommend you read widely on the subject, study bible texts on healing, and spend time with mature believers who pray for others effectively.

We all start praying for the sick with someone at some point in time, and we can grow in our knowledge and experience. In every case, we need to stay responsive to the leading of the Spirit – He knows how He’ll do the healing.  Will the healing be instantaneous restoration? Progressive recovery? Will we have to keep on keeping on praying? And sometimes the Spirit gives specific instructions, as you’ll find in this adaptation from 'He Leads me: Adventures in God Workbook'. God healed the same medical condition (severe burns) in two ways: the first was a miraculous instant healing, and the second was progressive, using a medicinally sound herbal treatment. In both cases, a complete healing resulted. At the time, we were puzzled. Now we understand - the Spirit was training us to be more and more responsive to His leading in health and healing and every aspect of life.'

And this brings us to a very important point. We often follow formulas we’ve learnt from other believers. Life in the Spirit is far beyond formulas, as this pastor with a healing ministry was to discover – while having a shower…

Ray was a respected pastor with a notable healing ministry. He was a man of faith who prayed for the sick through the laying on of hands (Mark 16:18). He also sent out anointed cloths imbued with God’s power through prayer and touch like Paul did (Acts 19:12). And he operated in the gifts of healings (1 Corinthians 12:28) that work to release a specific area or areas of healing such as praying for bone issues, eye issues and so on. Ray had been thoroughly trained through a bible-based ministry that understood healing and faith. He applied what he’d learnt and had seen with dedication. People came from all over to have him lay hands and pray for their healing. But Ray had agonising joint pain that was getting worryingly worse and worse. He believed God for healing; he had the most effective prayers in his church pray over him, and he was anointed with oil (James 5:14). And his pain kept growing. It was becoming so serious that it was affecting his movement.  He kept asking God why he wasn’t healed. He was doing everything he knew to do.

Ray’s taking a shower, relaxing in the pleasant, hot flow of steamy water, when the Spirit speaks to answer his question: “You’re eating too much red meat. Cut down how much steak you eat and how often.” Ray loved devouring big, juicy steaks every day and wrongly believed that the more red meat he ate, the more he could build his muscles. He heard the Spirit’s leading, adjusted his diet and was healed of joint pain within weeks.

Of course, if you have joint pain, it might be something completely different, so pray, seek God and ensure you see your doctor…

Over the years, we’ve applied our knowledge of biblical healing and health. It’s a vast subject. And we’ve always sought to be open to the Spirit’s leading, as He knows far more than we do and what method He wants to use. We share the many ways the Spirit led in bringing healing in our books.

As we’ve seen, healing includes prayer. It also includes much more. In all this is the leading of the Spirit. Should you pray about pain, injury or sickness once, as we’ve done or keep on praying as we’ve done? The Spirit knows. Should you bathe in a river, a pool stirred by an angel, or lay hands? He knows. What steps must I take regarding diet, supplements, environment, stress and work? He knows that, too. The Spirit often gives specific instructions, like using cabbage and camomile to heal a burn, reducing red meat consumption in Ray’s case.

Paul had a powerful healing ministry; he also travelled with Luke, a practising, much-loved doctor (Colossians 4:14) and advised his trainee to take a little wine for his various ailments (1 Timothy 5:23). Jesus told a family to feed their daughter after he raised her from the dead Mark 5:43. What does all this tell us? Pray for healing and health, do what you know, seek medical advice, and stay ever open to God’s leading.

As we grow more sensitive and responsive to the leading of God, we will be taken far beyond our limited knowledge in our health, our healing and every aspect of our lives. We can live a life of ongoing adventures in God’s continual leading. You are a believer who should continue to grow in the ability to bring healing. And so, you can pray for yourself and others to receive healing through the power of the Spirit. You can learn about biblical healing by reading examples in the bible, in books, and watching others and then doing the same, led by the Spirit. You've been given this great gift of the Spirit. Let Him guide you as you grow in your knowledge and application of healing.

Many times, we are held back from operating in the fullness of kingdom living guided by the Spirit because we don't know or find it hard to believe that this empowerment is given to us. I've written a book to strengthen you in this area called 'You Are...31 Uplifting Truths About You!' Use this book to strengthen your knowledge of who you are in Christ so you can operate in the fullness of kingdom living.
